Story
The idea for Early Bird
Baby was planted years before the company was
born. It really started when two women – neighbors,
in fact – formed a special friendship due in
part to a unique bond they shared. Both women,
Shannon Dwyer and Patty Nagle, were mothers
of premature babies.
Patty had preemie twins. Shannon had two consecutive
preemies.
After sharing their experiences
with each other, Patty and Shannon realized
they had encountered many of the same challenges
with their preemies. What proved the most difficult
challenge, however, was being away from their
new babies, when the little ones spent time
in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). This
separation
inhibited the bonding
they (and all mothers!) innately desire.
Finding
ways to bond while apart became their
mission. Patty and Shannon continuously
sought ways to remain connected with
their children. Later, they would
find an even deeper meaning in their
quest: Shannon had to be away from
her children while undergoing treatment
for cancer; Patty, who returned to
a career after the birth of her first
two children, realized that with
the birth of her premature twins
she needed to be home with them.
That's when the idea for Early
Bird Baby emerged. For all their
efforts, both women had found
few sources that offered simple
ways to help parents bond with
their children. They figured
other parents encountered the
same obstacles. Shannon and Patty
got to work assembling all the
